Marcin met Michalina Lewandowska when they both lived in Poland. It was 2005: they met in a shop near her home and it was love at first sight. Michalina’s father, however, had a bad feeling and believed his daughter’s young boyfriend would bring nothing but trouble. Marcin was a spoiled young man, very attached to his mother, a woman who was extremely overprotective of him.

The couple moved to Britain and went to live in a flat owned by his parents. Things went well between them, and Marcin asked Michalina to marry him, giving her a beautiful ring. She happily accepted and the two lived contentedly until 2008, when their first son, Jakub, was born.

After Jakub’s birth, Marcin started going to the gym regularly to do bodybuilding. His muscles grew, and so did his use of steroids. He used so many that he became dependent on them, and this caused sudden outbursts of rage.

Marcin decided that Michalina no longer deserved to live with him in his parents’ house and resolved to get rid of her, so he could raise their son with his beloved mother.

The burial

buried his fiancee alive

On 28 May 2011, at their home in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, Marcin told his partner he wanted to take her shopping. She got ready and waited for him at the door, unaware of what he was planning. When she saw him, he had a taser in his hand and gave her a 300,000-volt shock that paralysed and stunned her. Then he tied her up, put her in a large cardboard box and loaded it into the car.

He drove to a nearby wood, next to the Woodsome Hall golf course, dug a shallow hole and put the box in it so that Michalina was face down. Then he covered the hole, placed a branch weighing about 40 kg on top in case she tried to escape, and left her to suffocate.

Michalina found herself face down in a box buried in a wood, far from any help and with very little oxygen. At that moment, she says, she was thinking of her son. Who would take care of him if she died? This gave her the strength to fight back, and using the engagement ring Marcin had given her she freed herself from the tape that bound her, then started breaking the box and finally managed to get out and call for help.

The arrest

Marcin was arrested soon afterwards along with an accomplice, 18-year-old Patryk Borys, but told police he had only wanted to scare her and that he would have gone back to get her. In reality, right after burying his partner, Marcin had taken money from her credit card.

He was charged with attempted murder and in January 2012 Leeds Crown Court sentenced him to 20 years in prison. The judge said that being buried alive “must be one of the most terrible ways of dying that one can imagine”. Borys, who had pleaded guilty to kidnapping, got four and a half years.

Michalina had stayed shut in that box underground for about an hour. She is safe now, but lives in fear that he might come back to kill her and her son, and is tormented by terrible nightmares.
