The story I’m about to tell you is that of Fulvia Pellegrino, a transgender woman from Piedmont who has undergone a huge number of cosmetic surgeries to achieve the perfect body. But what is, in her view, the perfect body? That of her idol, transgender porn star Allanah Starr.
Who is Fulvia Pellegrino?
Fulvia Pellegrino was born in Peveragno, a small town of about 5,000 people in the province of Cuneo. She was assigned male at birth and named Fulvio. She grew up in a very religious, old-fashioned family and, at around 15, realized for the first time that she was different from how she had been raised, but didn’t have the courage to tell her parents.
So began a life of lies and subterfuge, hiding her true female self, trapped in a male body.
She went on living as a man, lying to everyone. In 1984 she met Marisa and the two married without anyone suspecting a thing. Marisa too knew nothing, and Fulvia, to be more convincing, tried to appear extremely masculine, going hunting and taking an interest in cars.
I felt trapped in my body. I would lock myself in the garage, dress up in women’s clothes and put on make-up.
In secret she also went to gay clubs. Her double life went on until 2000, when she finally decided to come out.
Coming out
The first person she told her secret to was her wife Marisa. She told her that body didn’t belong to her and that she wanted to change it. After an understandable moment of bewilderment,
Marisa understood her wish and supported her choice, but she was the only one to do so.
It wasn’t always easy for Marisa, who at one point needed psychotherapy to come to terms with the changes, but she has said she loves the person Fulvia is inside. Fulvia’s family, on the other hand, shut her out: her father even tried to persuade Marisa to sign a document to have her committed to a psychiatric hospital. Fortunately Marisa refused.
The surgeries
Since then Fulvia has undergone a great many operations, spending, according to newspapers at the time, around 70,000 euros. She does it with a precise idea in mind: to look like porn star Allanah Starr.
Her operations include three breast augmentations, two liposuctions, work on her hips and buttocks, a nose job, a facelift and around 150 procedures on her face and lips.
And she has no intention of stopping until she reaches her goal: “When I get there, maybe I’ll stop”, she said.
Fulvia and Marisa still live together, no longer as husband and wife, but as two friends, almost two sisters.
